Globothalamean foraminifera (Pawlowski et al., 2013) colonized nearly all marine paleoenvironments, including benthic and planktonic habitats.

Any foraminifer of the class Globothalamea, differentiated by their globular shell chambers.

Globothalameans possess globular chambers and minimal distances between successive apertures; tubothalameans possess tubular chambers and maximal distances between apertures; lagenids, like Tubothalamea, are characterised by maximal distances between apertures (related with terminal chamber formation), but their chambers are rather globular.

In both tubothalameans and globothalameans, the chambers more or less coil around the proloculus to form a spiral.
