A programming system in which small constructs (macros) represent groups of machine instructions.

The larger cultural system in which an individual lives.

Any large-scale system.

In defining a mail access protocol, it is important to keep in mind that the client and server form a macrosystem, in which it should be possible to exploit the strong points of both while compensating for each other's weaknesses.
