The electric locomotives, which have been a familiar sight for so many years, are to be withdrawn from passenger service, but a few will be retained for miscellaneous non-passenger duties.

The last but necessary characters to be described in the later 1970s, were the non-passenger locomotives brought into Amtrak stock with the purchase of the North-East Corridor from Conrail in 1976.
